Billy Ray Smith: Anthony Edwards
Billy Ray Smith is a Bostonian now living in the Wild West as a school teacher. He lives for the dime novel adventures of Kid Durango, even reading them aloud to his class. When one of his students is kidnapped by the notorious El Diablo and his gang, Billy Ray is sure he can find Kid Durango and enlist the heroes services to rescue the girl. Billy Ray can't use a gun, faints regularly and within a few minutes of accepting this rescue mission, his horse is dead. But he finds the gunman Van Leek (who shoots a man in the back because his back was to him) who says he'll take Billy Ray to Kid Durango. Along the way they pick up a series of other western misfits (a half-hanged man, a strange Indian, a preacher) who take up the quest. Don plays Jake, the leader of a group of bickering bounty hunters hot on the trail of Billy Ray (who has a price on his head for the man that Van Leek killed). Don's dry sarcasm is perfect. It's the funniest scene in the movie.
