This made-for-TV movie begins with the declaration that "What follows here is not intended to be an accurate re-creation of fact. Not that it matters." The story of the outlaw brothers begins when they are children, in awe to meet their infamous cousins, Jesse and Frank James. The oldest Dalton brother, Frank (Don Collier), is a sheriff. Bob, Grat and Emmet try to follow in his footsteps for a time, but their wild ways provide a more profitable (and more fun) exsistence. But they take up crime seriously, robbing the train lines of the man who has unjustly jailed Grat. Railroad detective Will Smith (Jack Palance) does everything in his power to catch the boys, and after a particularly devastating ambush, the Daltons give the trains a rest. Banks become their next target.  They set their sights on Coffyville, Kansas, their home town. History has already told us what happens in the end.

Sheriff Frank Dalton (Don) is on the trail of
the James Gang

Frank Dalton tells his brothers to behave while their father (Royal Dano) listens
