Marshal Cass: Don Collier
Jack Wade: Peter Mark Richman
Story by Mark Rodgers
U.S. Marshal Cass wants
Shiloh ranch hand Steve Hill to spy on his former girlfriend, Jane Carlisle.
Jane is new in town and working as a singer in the saloon. Marshal Cass
thinks that she is a member of the notorious Jack Wade gang, who have robbed
seventeen banks in the last three years,
murdering twenty-seven people. Jane always seems to show up in the town of a
robbery a week before it happens. No one has been able to identify Jack Wade
because the gang members always wear masks. Steve isn't happy with the idea
- he can't believe that the girl he almost married would be involved in the
Wade gang. Judge Garth tells Steve that the government is buying up Indian
land - a transaction he helped arrange. $50,000 in gold is traveling
to Medicine Bow for the sale. Marshal Cass is convinced that the Wade gang
is going to go after it. Steve reluctantly agrees to help the Marshal.
With the help of some crooked dice of the
Marshal's, Steve wins a year's wages and then does everything he can to get
the Virginian to fire him. He tells Jane about the $50,000 that's coming into Medicine Bow -
it's his big chance. After he steals the gold he has a cabin in the mountains
he can hide out in. He expects Jane to be with him. She tells him she
doesn't want to be pushed, but she does succumb to his embrace.

After spending some time in a romantic setting,
Steve is sure that Jane is innocent and tells the Marshal so. She has not
raised the slightest interest in the $50,000. She's even told him she
doesn't want him to try anything. But the Marshal needs more proof. He wants
Steve to tell Jane when, where and how the gold is being delivered. Steve
agrees. Jack Wade comes to see Jane -
he's heard all about this boy. He wants Jane to arrange a meeting and find
out how much Steve knows. Jane in concerned for Steve's life but Wade tells
her he just wants information. And he'll be watching her.
Worried about what the Marshal will do, now
Steve tells Jane that he's changed his mind. All he wants to do is run away
with her. But Wade interrupts them.
He
wants to know about the gold. Steve tells him he'll only give out that
information if he is allowed to join Wade's gang. Wade agrees. Amd Steve
informs his that the gold will be delivered on Sunday, when no one will be
expecting it.
Back with the Marshal, Steve wants a promise
that Jane will get a break.
He
is sure that she would have pulled out if Wade hadn't showed up. If he
doesn't get a promise he won't show up with Wade, who won't try the robbery
and the Marshal will miss his chance to catch him.
On Sunday, the army soldiers coming for the
gold are ambushed on the way into town by Jane's ruse of lying motionless on
the trail. The soldiers are disarmed by Wade's gang. Wade and his men put on
the soldiers' uniforms. Then Wade forces the lieutenant to come with
him. It's a windy day so it doesn't look suspicious for Wade to have a
kerchief covering his face. As the gold is handed over, Marshal Cass tells
them he has planted a man in Wade's gang.
Wade is happy with his windfall but he has
business to finish with the spy. What other plans did the Marshal have? But
Steve won't talk. Jane begs Wade not to kill him. When that fails, she
shoves him as he as about to shoot. Wade and Steve struggle, Steve knocks
the robber out with a rifle. The lovers embrace.
Back
in Medicine Bow, Steve tells the Judge that he would never have turned Jane
in. But the Judge assures him that because Jane gave herself up and saved
his life, that she'll receive a light sentence. They'll be seeing each other
soon.
