The Civil War is over, and ex-Union Colonel John Henry Thomas (John Wayne) sets out to round up wild horses to sell to the government of the Mexican Emperor. He encounters ex-Confederate Colonel James Langdon (Rock Hudson) who is leading a group of Confederates to Mexico; since the South was defeated they no longer want to make it their home. The two groups cross paths and develop a respect for each other.  In Mexico,  Langdon's people are taken hostage by Mexican rebels fighting the Emperor. They will be executed unless Thomas can come to their rescue.
