Don Collier hosted
the first 12 seasons of The Desert Speaks, produced by KUAT-TV, Southern
Arizona's Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) affiliate. The Desert Speaks
is an Emmy-Award-winning nature/science series focusing on the plants, animals,
people, culture, and natural habitat of the desert. Many episodes from past
seasons are still broadcast on PBS stations throughout the country. All manner
of fascinating subjects are covered, from the sun-baked Pinacate, south of the
Arizona/Sonora border, to desert oases, to insects, birds, mammals, reptiles,
fish, amphibians, restoration ecology, and grasslands. Each program features
interviews with experts focusing on a variety of topics, including botany,
geology, environmental education, and desert wildlife, as well as offering the
beautiful vistas and exotic flora and fauna of the desert southwest. There are
climate detectives who explore the secrets of climate change through analyzing
everything from tree rings to dinosaur bones to fossil dung. Other episodes
examine common myths and stereotypes about desert plants and animals, and still
others follow migrating birds from Colorado to Mexico. Topics cover the effect
of fire on the desert landscape and its inhabitants, Karchner Caverns, and the
Colorado River canyon environment. Others explore the carnivorous tadpole,
hummingbirds, bats, killer bees, sand dunes, cacti, frogs, and the incredible
desert when the sun goes down.
The Desert Speaks is
produced by KUAT-TV in cooperation with the renowned Arizona-Sonora Desert
Museum and the Arizona Chapter of the Nature Conservancy.
